Australian Bushfires

There has been a lot of news coverage of the fires burning in Australia, and most of us have seen the photo of "Sam" and the fireman who gave her water.

I received a request for donations from IFAW, and wanted to post a bit of information here:

"Hundreds of people and countless animals have already perished in the worst bushfire disaster Australia has ever faced.

Kangaroos have been found dead on the roads...cows burned where they lay...one turtle's shell melted and fused to its body...a baby wallaby's ears and nose were burned to a crisp when he stuck his head outside his mother's pouch.

IFAW's Emergency Relief Team is already on the ground helping local wildlife caretakers with search and rescue operations, providing medical treatment to burned and abandoned animals that are emerging from the fire zone - koalas, possums, kangaroos, dogs, even horses and birds - as well as food and vet supplies."

If you have a bit of extra funds, they could really use the money. Click here to make a donation.

If I had the means, I'd be on a plane to Australia to volunteer. Since I can't do that, I can at least offer financial help.

As a side note, volunteer firefighter David Tree, pictured here with Sam the Koala, has been recognized by PETA, with the Hero To Animals Award.

From The Australian News website:  "Sam" the koala was spotted by Victorian volunteer firefighter David Tree moving around on scorched paws.

Mr Tree crouched down and offered the furry marsupial a gulp from his water bottle, which she accepted, placing her paw in his hand as she drank three bottles.

A photo and video of the moment have been broadcast around the world.

"This tragedy has shown the best and worst in people," PETA director Jason Baker said.

"The compassion that David Tree showed in caring for Sam is an inspiration to others throughout the community and beyond."

I say, Well Done Mr. Tree!!
